The Citadel got a career-high 25 points from David Stevens and trounced VMI 80-57 in a Southern Conference men's basketball game Monday night at Cameron Hall.
Five players scored in double figures for The Citadel (11-13, 6-10) which shot 52 percent for the game. The Keydets (4-20, 2-14) shot 38 percent and committed 19 turnovers.
"We didn't shoot well, but I was also disappointed because we didn't play well overall," said Joe Cantafio, VMI's coach. "We have to bounce back. We've got another one coming up Saturday and we just can't give up."
The Keydets, who play host to Furman on Saturday in their last home game of the season, were ice cold from the start, making just one field goal in the first eight minutes of play. Freshman Darryl Faulkner made a 3-pointer and senior Jonathan Goodman converted one free throw as VMI trailed 18-4 with 12:27 to play. At that point, the Keydets were shooting 16 percent to 72 percent by the Bulldogs.
"It was just unfortunate that we played poorly," Cantafio said. "We can't make any excuses . . . They just outplayed us. We've got to be more physical."
The Keydets were down 39-12 with 4:43 left in the first half but made up 10 points in the closing minutes to pull to 45-22 at halftime.
VMI was not much better at the start of the second half, but stuck with the Bulldogs until a Moncrief Michael dunk at the 10:05 mark that gave The Citadel its biggest lead of the game, 67-37.
Michael, a freshman forward, scored 13 points for the Bulldogs, as did junior Reggie Jones. Terry Campbell and Augustus McDowell had 10 points each.
Faulkner and Lawrence Gullette paced the Keydets with 14 points each. Gullette also added a team-high nine rebounds and three steals.
Goodman, VMI's leading rebounder with an 8.7 average, had three rebounds and 10 points.
