ALL-STATE QB CHOOSES COLORADO STATE

Craig Akins, the first-team All-Group AA quarterback, made an oral commitment to Colorado State this past weekend and plans to sign a letter-of-intent in the next couple of days.

Akins, from two-time Division 3 runner-up Matoaca, was the last uncommitted player on a list of the state's top 25 prospects compiled by the Roanoke Times & World-News.

Akins, a 6-foot-5, 205-pounder, completed 142 of 292 passes for 2,366 yards and also set a state record with 30 touchdown passes. Matoaca was 34-6 in his four years as a starter, with four of the losses to eventual state champions Nottoway and Jefferson Forest.

A review of Virginia Tech's recruiting will highlight the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club meeting tonight at the Sheraton Inn in Roanoke.

Athletic director Dave Braine and head football coach Frank Beamer will be featured speakers at the reception, which begins at 7 p.m.

Films will be shown on Tech's 1994 recruiting class and highlights from the 1993 season.
