EX-NFL STAR IS NAMED TO EDUCATION BOARD

Gov. George Allen on Monday appointed National Football League Hall of Fame member William Dudley of Lynchburg to the State Council of Higher Education.

Dudley, whose nickname was "Bullet Bill," was a football star at the University of Virginia, where Allen later played quarterback. He played professionally for several teams, including the Washington Redskins - a team later coached by Allen's father.

Dudley, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966, worked for more than 30 years for The Equitable Life Assurance Co.

He succeeds Paul Goldman, former state Democratic Party chairman and longtime adviser to former Gov. Douglas Wilder.

Also named to the higher-education board was George Phillips Jr. of Virginia Beach. Phillips is chairman of the board of Henderson & Phillips Insurance and president of the Virginia Military Institute Foundation. He succeeds Charles C. Lacy.

Allen reappointed Val McWhorter, a Springfield attorney, and John Wynne of Virginia Beach, president of Landmark Communications. - Associated Press
