HIPPENSTEEL WINS TITLE IN TENNIS

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke defeated Dustin Freeman of Baltimore 7-5, 6-2 on Monday in the final of the Mid-Atlantic Boys' 14-and-under tennis championship in Laurel, Md.

With the victory, Hippensteel solidified his No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association.

In other sports in the region:

Jim Pyne, Virginia Tech's All-America center, has been named to the Big East All-Academic football team.

Pyne, a 6-foot-2, 280-pounder senior from Milford, Mass., is a marketing major.
