VA. FAMILY DESIGNATED BLACK FAMILY OF YEAR

A Virginia widow and her nine children were named National Black Family of the Year on Tuesday for their community contributions.

Ida P. Jones, who lives in the community of Freeman in Brunswick County, and her family will receive the award Thursday during the eighth National Black Family Summit in North Charleston, S.C.

Among the community contributions for which Jones and her children were cited are two scholarship funds they established at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville.

"We were of limited means, but we always believed in sharing and becoming involved in the community," said oldest daughter Ella Jones Richardson of Richmond. - Associated Press
