COUGARS PUT DOWN EAGLES

Pulaski County came inside from the cold Tuesday to find a victory in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball tournament.

After going 3-of-11 from the outside in the opening 16 minutes, the Cougars showed more patience as they shunned the 3-pointer and pulled away to beat Franklin County 63-54 at the Salem Civic Center.

The victory matches Pulaski County (7-12) with top-seeded Patrick Henry (14-5) in a semifinal at 7 p.m. today at the civic center.

"We took more outside shots than we have all year. We weren't showing patience. It was taking us only three seconds to shoot," said Pat Burns, the Cougars' coach.

Pulaski County tried only one 3-point shot in the second half. Instead, Eric Webb went inside to score 18 of his game-high 27 points. That, along with 23 by teammate Tyrone Hash, was too much for the Eagles (8-13).

"Coach told us to calm down. He said we were taking too many 3-point shots," said Webb, who hit 11 of 21 field-goal attempts and grabbed 10 rebounds.

"We started thinking power play and keeping them off the boards," said Hash, who was 8-of-15 from the floor with 11 rebounds as the Cougars held a 46-42 edge on the boards.

As for the Webb-Hash combination, which nearly matched the Eagles' scoring total, "We play off each other," Hash said. "We've done it several games. It's a good combination."

Franklin County got 17 points from Chad Foutz and 16 from Carlos Holland. The Eagles, though, were 5-of-23 from 3-point range.

Pulaski County took the lead for good when Webb's layup made it 34-32 early in the third quarter. The Cougars went ahead by as many as eight when the Eagles, behind Foutz's 3-point shooting, closed to 54-48 and had the ball.

John Sawyers was fouled and missed a free throw, and Larry Turner's follow shot wouldn't fall. After that, Pulaski County pulled away. \
