HARVEY TOPS SPENDING LIST

Councilmen Jim Harvey and John Edwards are top spenders in the two Democratic primary contests set for March 1, according to campaign spending reports released Tuesday.

Harvey reported campaign expenditures of $6,363 through Friday. He has a 10-1 spending advantage over teacher Linda Wyatt in a two-way race for the Democratic nomination for a two-year term.

Edwards reported spending $5,041, the highest amount among the four Democratic candidates seeking three four-year spots.

Here are some highlights from expense reports filed by the six Democrats:

Harvey reported 21 contributions totaling $3,065 and a $5,000 loan from the candidate. Contributing more than $100 were: First Union executive Warner Dalhouse, $500; Roanoke Electric Steel Chairman John Hancock, $200; Carilion President Thomas Robertson, $250; and developer Elbert Waldron, $1,000.

Wyatt reported 23 contributions totaling $1,842. Contributing $100 or more were: Aerospace and Machinists Union, $100; Virginia Education Association President Rob Jones, $100; Progressive Democratic Coalition Chairman Sam Garrison, $300; retired Rep. Jim Olin, $200; Roanoke Education Association, $500; Virginia Education Association Director Gary Waldo, $100; attorney Onzlee Ware, $100.

Edwards reported 95 contributions totaling $8,050 and a $1,000 loan from the candidate. Contributing more than $100 were: Karen E. Dunker, $150; James R. Edwards, $150; R. Thomas Edwards, $150; Augusta Saul Edwards Farrier, $250; Richard Kurshan, $150; Julien H. Meyer, $200; Jess Newbern, $250; Harry Schwarz, $200; Alan R. Tempkin, $500; Timothy J. Thielecke, $250; Martha Woodrum Zillhardt, $150; mortician Lawrence Hamlar, $250; hotel executive Heidi Krisch, $250; arts activist Sally Rugaber, $200; Olin, $150; Hancock, $200; Garrison, $150.

Councilman William White reported 30 contributions totaling $1,915 and a $2,500 loan from the candidate. Contributing more than $100 were: Dr. Verna M. Lewis, $250; and Hamlar, $150.

School Board member Nelson Harris reported 49 contributions toaling $3,060 and a $900 loan from the candidate. Contributing more than $100 were: G. Frank Clement, $200; Hartwell C. Martin, $150; and Mason Miller Jr., $150.

Former City Councilman Jim Trout reported 30 contributions totaling $2,501 and a $1,260 loan from the candidate. He reported no donation of more than $100.
