W&L TIES IN BASEBALL

Washington and Lee played to a 2-2 tie with Shenandoah in a baseball game called after nine innings Tuesday because of darkness.

Shenandoah loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but Generals reliever Matt Ermigiotti came on to end the threat when Anthony Redifer struck out on a suicide-squeeze attempt and Rodney Allen was tagged out at the plate.

In other sports in the region:

Jim Pyne, Virginia Tech's All-America center, has been named to the Big East All-Academic football team.

Pyne, a 6-foot-2, 280-pounder senior from Milford, Mass., is a marketing major.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke defeated Dustin Freeman of Baltimore 7-5, 6-2 in the final of the Mid-Atlantic Boys' 14-and-under tennis championship Monday in Laurel, Md.

With the victory, Hippensteel solidified his No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association.

Tuesday's Virginia-VMI baseball was postponed because of rain and snow in Lexington. The game will be made up at 4 p.m. April 6.
