SENATE OKS NOMINEE FOR STATE DEPARTMENT

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Strobe Talbott to be deputy secretary of state after a testy daylong debate dominated by blistering Republican attacks on Talbott's views on Israel and Russia.

Democrats responded by praising Talbott as highly qualified for the nation's second-ranking diplomatic post and accusing the GOP of using the Talbott nomination to engage in "partisan mudslinging" over foreign policy.

The vote to confirm Talbott was 66-31. Twelve Republicans joined all 54 Democrats who voted in backing the nomination.
