BULLDOGS PUT IT ON THE LINE

Martinsville made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, propelling the Bulldogs to a 78-71 victory over Gretna in the opening round of the Piedmont District boys' basketball tournament Tuesday in Martinsville.

The Bulldogs (18-3), the tournament's top seed, led by only three points over the No. 8 Hawks after three quarters. Gretna kept the game close until the final minute of the game, but Martinsville's clutch free-throw shooting won it down the stretch.

Carlos Martin led the Bulldogs with 21 points and Michael Martin added 20. William Merritt led Gretna with 24 points.

The Bulldogs will play Fieldale-Collinsville Thursday at Bassett High School. \

In other Piedmont District games:

\ Fieldale-Collinsville 65, Tunstall 61: At Tunstall, Shane Donavant and Ben Seay scored 21 points apiece as the Cavaliers (12-10) outlasted the Trojans in overtime.

Tunstall (13-9) got a game-high 36 points from Khris Law.

Fieldale-Collinsville led 37-30 at halftime but saw its lead disappear in the third quarter. The Cavaliers regained control at the outset of overtime and won the extra period 8-4. \

Magna Vista 91, Dan River 73: In Ridgeway, the Warriors broke to a 28-10 lead and the Wildcats never cut their deficit to fewer than nine points the rest of the way in a first-round game. Magna Vista advances to meet the Laurel Park-Bassett winner Friday night at Bassett.

Tony Holmes had 21 points to lead five double-figure scorers for the Warriors (15-4). Rodney Redd added 19.

Thomas Wade scored 23 points and Chris Wilson added 22 for Dan River.

\ Oak Hill Academy 73

Long Island Lutheran 52

MOUTH OF WILSON - Curtis Staples scored 20 points, including five 3-pointers as the Warriors rolled past Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.).

Oak Hill Academy (29-1) led 33-21 at halftime and never trailed.

Alex Sanders scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Warriors. Shan Carnes added 15 points and Tavares Johnson had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Jamar Smiley scored 15 points and Vasco Evfimov chipped in 14 for Long Island Lutheran (16-3). \

Parry McCluer 67

Glenvar 63

BUENA VISTA - Chris Carter scored six of his 14 points in overtime as Parry McCluer won the Pioneer District regular season title Monday night with a victory over Glenvar.

Parry McCluer (18-2 overall, 11-1 in the district) got 22 points from Nathan Baker, 14 from Mike McElroy and 10 from Brandon Garrett. Jason Anderson had 15, Brad Melton 14 and Jason Darnall 10 for Glenvar (12-6, 9-3).

Glenvar trailed by four points late in regulation but Melton made two free throws and a field goal on consecutive possessions - the last with 20 seconds left - to tie the game. Parry McCluer was 3-for-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. \

James River 65

Covington Boys Home 62

COVINGTON - Keith Bryant scored 30 points as James River outlasted Covington Boys' Home in a non-district game Monday night.

Covington, which got 32 points from Donnie Costigan, played the last 25 seconds with four players after losing three players to fouls.

Covington (11-8) tied the game at 62 with 40 seconds left. James River's Isaac Minnis made one of two free throws, and Covington committed a turnover. Curtis Nolan made two free throws with five seconds left to clinch it.

Nolan had 12 points and Jason Perry 10 for James River. Costigan made six of 13 3-pointers. Teammate Scotty Forbes added 15 points.

NEW CASTLE - Patrick Lennon had 19 points as the Chargers beat the Rockets in a Pioneer District game Monday night.

Caleb Kirkland added 13 points for Bath (6-6 in the district). Gary Abbott had 15 for Craig (4-8).
