While the competition in the Pulaski Boys Minor Basketball League may be different, these youths age 10-and-under have the same aim when they play the game: to outscore their opposition.
And the Hornets have done that every game so far this season. They finished regular season play with a 9-0 record in the league and 12-0 overall.
To achieve their lofty record, the Hornets had a different hero (or heroes) almost every game.
Seven different players scored when the Hornets topped the Timberwolves 60-20. GREG SARTIN led the way with 16 points and HEATH REEDY added 10.
Twice the Hornets tamed the Tigers. In the first meeting, the Hornets won 24-12 behind balanced scoring, led by KELLEN WOHLFORD with nine points. The second time around, the Hornets got 11 from JEFF KING and 10 from Wohlford in a 28-10 win.
King was a king in two games against the Suns. He poured in 13 points in a 34-20 win and had 17 in a 36-22 victory. TODD SOUTHERN had 10 and 13 points in the two games for the Suns.
The Sonics (9-1, 11-1) were to the Boys Major League (ages 12-and-under) what the Hornets were to the Minor League.
The Sonics clinched their lofty finishing position with a 45-31 win over the Bulls in the season finale. ROGER ADAMS had 22 points for the Sonics as they rallied from an early 8-0 deficit. The Bulls were paced by 21 points from DAVID TILLER.
The loss eliminated the Wolverines, which had won five games down the stretch. But the Sonics won the late-season matchup between the front-runners 33-28 as Adams scored 23 points.
ot was all easy for the Sonics in the finals weeks. Besides the constant pressure from the Wolverines, they had to deal with two other foes getting 20-point performances.
ADAM DALTON scored 22 points for the Magic as they handed the Sonics their only defeat, 34-17.
MIKE TILLEY had a league season-high 27 points for the Lakers but it wasn't enough as the Sonics won 48-35.
The Wolverines late-season march was led by JASON DEAN. He scored in double-figures in four of six games, including a 20-point performance in a 39-28 win over the Magic.
ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP CONTINUED: There's a three-team race in the Blacksburg Men's A League. The London Underground (5-0) is the only unbeaten while The Team (5-1) and First National Bank (4-1) have each only lost once.
London Underground handed The Team its only loss 70-48 as QUINTON NOTTINGHAM had 31 points. Nottingham came back with 33 in the Underground's 74-62 win over Homeboyz.
However, a power failure at the rec center prevented the matchup between London Underground and FNB.
The Team bounced back from its loss with a 61-51 win over Big Tools behind 16 points from LLOYD ZELAZNY and a forfeit victory over P.K.'s
First National Bank kept pace by besting P.K.'s 59-55 as J. WHITAKER had 16 points and routing Big Tools 78-46 as TIM MCGUIRE scored 17.
The Travel Squad (6-0) remained perfect in the Blacksburg Men's B League. MARK WALLACE scored 24 points to lead it over Federal Mogul 66-53. And Travel Squad beat Montgomery Regional Hospital 71-62 as GRANT WALKER poured in 35.
In other league action, BRIAN EAVES had the high scoring night for the week with 35 points but it wasn't enough as Electro-Tec fell to Shelor's 69-54.
Interior Design and Nutrition (3-1) stayed atop the Blacksburg Women's Open League by beating Valley Chiropractic 36-32 as ANGIE RUTLEDGE scored 10. LASAUNDRA SIDDLEo scored 10 for Valley (2-2).
Meanwhile, Sub Shack (2-2) stayed close as CARA CHEETWOOD had 12 points in a 45-30 win over Sharkey's.
In the Pulaski Men's Minor Tournament, the Bad Boys are the only unbeaten team left. They knocked off Renfro 72-57 in the winners' bracket final. RALPH PRESTLOW had a season-best 34 points to lead the Bad Boys while TERRY GULLEY tallied 15 points on five treys.
MIKE ADAMS scored 20 points for Renfro.
In other tournament action, Pepsi Cola came back from a 16-point deficit to eliminate Satellite Services 55-52. MIKE WILLIAMS paced Pepsi with 18 points.
And Mike SAMSON poured in 35 and MIKE HUDSON 18 to lead Pulaski Hospital\ past Electroplate Rite 64-57 in another elimination game.
VOLLEYBALL VIEW: Sting (11-0-1) has yet to feel the sting of defeat in the Blacksburg Men's Power League. The only blemish on its record is a tie against Da Sooper Fans in a game called at four-all because of time. And that near-perfect record is needed for Sting to stay in front because the Unstables (14-1), the only other team in the league with a winning record, are close behind.
Sharkey's (14-1) is the shark of the Blacksburg Women's League. Recent losses by Diggin' It!, Total Chaos and the Unknowns have allowed Sharkey's to open a two-game lead in the loss column. The three teams chasing Sharkey's each have three losses.
Total Control (15-0) is now in total control of the Coed Power League. Gumbies (10-2) fell from the ranks of the unbeatens when it lost two-of-three games to Sporadic Spikes (11-4).
Goodtimes (6-0) is having a good time atop the Coed B League Division 1.
New Start (6-0) doesn't need one as it has moved in front in the Coed B League Division 2.

GOLF GATHERING: Fore is: (A) What I have to yell at lot when I golf because I am that bad; (B) A word that sounds like the number of months until the first tournament announced below; or (C) All of the above.
The correct answer is C.
The second annual Laurel Meadows Home golf tournament is June 16 at the Olde Mill Golf Resort in Laurel Fork (that's halfway between Stuart and Hillsville on U.S. 58).
The cost is $55 per person for the captain's choice morning tournament or the calloway afternoon tournament, or $80 to enter both tourneys. The cost includes lunch.

(And if you are curious as to how bad of a golfer I am, let's just say the handicap system doesn't go high enough to take my level of talent, or lack thereof, into account).
