CONTROVERSIAL GEORGIA FLAG BANNED AT STADIUM

In the latest of several official and unofficial actions that have made the Georgia flag less visible in Atlanta in the past year, officials voted Wednesday to remove the flag with its Confederate battle emblem from Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, home of the Atlanta Braves.

The decision by the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority means the flag will not fly at the Braves' home games this season. It also sets the stage for debate over whether the state flag, as now designed, will fly at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

The board's vote comes a year after the state Legislature rebuffed Gov. Zell Miller in his effort to return to the flag used between 1905 and 1956, when the Confederacy-linked design was adopted.

Reginald Williams, executive director of the stadium, said the vote to remove the flag was unanimous and reflected the views of both the City Council and the Fulton County Commission, the governing bodies that built and operate the stadium.
