Postal officials say they expect the new facility to be completed by spring 1995.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, faxed out a news release Thursday taking credit for the new office.
Goodlatte visited the post office on U.S. 220 last spring at the request of residents who wanted a new one. The congressman said that office is too small and creates a traffic hazard for customers trying to get in and out of its tiny parking lot.
Because the office is so small, he said, many people who live north of the Daleville office have to drive past it to Troutville to pick up their mail.
Postal officials said they expect to select the new site by July 1.
