SCHOOL-START BILL SAVED IN SENATE BY STAFF REPORT

Roanoke-area lawmakers rebuffed attempts Thursday to kill a bill that would allow Roanoke County's schools to open before Labor Day this fall.

After brief wrangling, the Senate rejected a move by Sen. Warren E. Barry, R-Fairfax, to return the bill, sponsored by Del. Richard Cranwell, D-Roanoke County, to the Senate Education and Health Committee.

"If this goes back to committee, the intent is to kill the bill," Sen. Brandon Bell, R-Roanoke, warned his colleagues. "Quit playing games with this and let it considered by the full Senate, where it belongs."

Already Cranwell's bill, and a separate measure sponsored by Del. Clifton "Chip" Woodrum, D-Roanoke, to give Roanoke's School Board the same authority, had been endorsed by the Senate Local Government Committee.

After more discussion, the Senate agreed to delay a vote on both bills until today.
