New CSX division going to W.Va.

CSX Corp., the Richmond-based transportation and real estate development company with operations in Western Virginia, said it will put a new division in Huntington, W.Va.

The C&O Business Unit, with as many as 20 management-level jobs, will serve CSX's biggest coal shippers. Included are the principal coal-hauling lines of the old Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, a predecessor of CSX subsidiary CSX Transportation Inc., said Michael J. Ward, who will head the unit.

Lots of companies have hiring plans

One-third of Roanoke Valley employers surveyed expect to hire this spring, a new report says.

Manpower Inc., a temporary employment agency, said regional results included in a national survey being released Monday show 33 percent of Roanoke Valley companies responding "will initiate hiring activity this spring, while 7 percent indicate employment reductions are intended." The remaining 60 percent expect no change in job levels, the company said.

Manpower asked companies about their employment plans for this year's second quarter. The results compare to three months ago, when 20 percent said they expected to hire workers during the current quarter and 7 percent projected staff cuts.

The best job prospects for the April-June quarter are in construction; wholesale and retail trade; and financial, real estate and insurance services. Job cuts were expected from transportation companies and utilities, Manpower said.

The transaction includes 15 envelope manufacturing plants and assets of another plant, operated as Mail-Well Envelopes and Wisco Envelopes.

Getting To Know You International Ltd., a new homeowner-welcoming advertising program based in Westbury, N.Y., said it has begun a central and Western Virginia operation including the Roanoke Valley.
