KEMPSVILLE QB SIGNS WITH KEYDETS

Ryan Talley, the quarterback for Kempsville High in Virginia Beach, has signed a letter-of-intent to play football for VMI. Talley completed 46 of 116 passes for 660 yards and four touchdowns for Kempsville, which finished 6-4. He is the eighth player known to have signed with the Keydets, who have not released a full list.

At Tallahassee, Fla., former North Cross star Daniel Summerlin anchored two winning relay teams and finished third in the 400 individual medley as North Carolina built a 67-point lead on second-place Virginia in the ACC swimming and diving championships. Summerlin, UNC's senior co-captain, set a UNC record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:50.90, which automatically qualified him for the NCAA championships.

F.L. Slough has been appointed the new Franklin County High School baseball coach. Slough was an assistant under longtime Eagles coach Mason Ligon, who turned in his resignation last month.

Two days after becoming a father, Dick Reck of Glen Allen will defend his men's open title in the Virginia State Racquetball Championships starting today at the Roanoke Athletic Club.

The tournament is sanctioned by the American Amateur Racquetball Association, with competition in men's, women's and junior divisions.

"They had come to us previously about holding the event, but this was the first time we felt we could make the commitment," Bud Grey, vice president of the RAC, said. "It's a major undertaking. It took us 11 hours just to do the draw."

Grey said he was surprised not by the size of the 125-player field, but by the number of players (85) who are entered in more than one division. There will be 205 matches by the time the finals get under way at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Players to watch include Roanoke native Jim Bailey, who is entered in the open division but is also the top seed in the 45-and-over division. Bailey, who lives in Norfolk, is nationally ranked in the latter age group.
