WALTRIP RELEASED FROM TENNESSEE HOSPITAL

Three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip was released from a Nashville, Tenn., hospital after a bout with an acute kidney infection.

"He has fully recovered and is feeling excellent," said Lisa Sigmon, a spokeswoman for the Harrisburg, N.C.-based team Waltrip owns.

Waltrip plans to race Sunday in the Goodwrench 500 at North Carolina Motor Speedway, Sigmon said. He was traveling to Rockingham on Thursday and will run in qualifying races today.

Waltrip, 47, of Franklin, Tenn., spent three days at Baptist Hospital after feeling ill much of last weekend at the Daytona 500.

Waltrip's doctor advised him to enter the hospital in order to recover from the infection before Sunday.

Waltrip also will join The Nashville Network's announcing crew and will handle several Saturday races.

Waltrip, the winningest active driver on the Winston Cup circuit, will be a color analyst for eight to 10 NASCAR races on Saturdays preceding TNN coverage of Winston Cup races. He joins play-by-play announcer Mike Joy and commentator Buddy Baker, replacing the late Neil Bonnett.
