Jackson entered a hospital last weekend for tests that diagnosed the problem, and he received anti-inflammatory and painkilling injections that eased but did not eliminate the pain in his back, a Tech spokesman said.
Tech's team doctor, Duane Lagan, said Jackson will undergo surgery Thursday or Friday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Jackson averaged 12.1 points and four rebounds in 22 games, all of which he started. A two-year starter, he was the third-leading 3-point shooter on the team this season with 16.
Senior Corey Jackson started in Jim Jackson's place at South Florida on Feb. 19 and had 18 points, but Jim Jackson's loss leaves the Hokies thin at small forward. Seldom-used senior Don Corker is next on the depth chart.
