EX-HUD AIDE GETS 21-MONTH SENTENCE

Deborah Gore Dean, once an audacious power on the capital scene, was sentenced to 21 months in prison without parole and fined $5,000 Friday for her part in a Reagan administration housing scandal.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan was scathing in his condemnation of the atmosphere at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where Dean worked as executive assistant to then-Secretary Samuel Pierce.

He likened it to "locusts descending on a lettuce patch."

"What concerns me is the sense of honor that apparently was lost in Dean that particular era," he said.

The scandal centered on the awarding of contracts for moderate housing rehabilitation to developers with political connections to Dean, HUD and the administration. Dean was convicted in late 1993 on 13 counts, including perjury, conspiring to defraud and concealing information.
