EXPRESS LOSES 6-3 TO MONARCHS

The Roanoke Express was reminded Friday night just how tough life on the road can be in the East Coast Hockey League, particularly in the East Division.

The Greenboro Monarchs played like a team with something to prove as they skated to a 6-3 victory over the Express before a crowd of 7,549 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Monarchs, who had won only one of their previous five games, came out flying and outshot Roanoke 23-9 in the first period to take a 4-2 lead.

The Monarchs set a dizzying pace from the opening faceoff and peppered the Roanoke net with 23 shots in the first period.

Phil Berger gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 26 seconds into the game. Berger put in the rebound of a Scott White blast from the point.

The Express tied the score at the 2 minute, 6 second mark when Tony Szabo beat Patrick Labrecque with a wrist shot.

Dan Gravelle, J.F. Jomphe and Berger scored in a 3 1/2 minute span. Gravelle put in a rebound of a White shot at the 5:09 mark before Jomphe redirected a Sverre Sears shot from the point at 6:38. Berger added a power-play goal 8:49 into the first to give the Monarchs the 4-1 edge.

Roanoke's Ilja Dubkov scored on a wide open net on the powerplay with only 1:33 remaining to make it 4-2 after one.

Greensboro outshot (18-7) and outscored Roanoke 2-1 in the second period to take a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes. \
