The announcement clarified an earlier county press release on steps taken this week to deal with the huge volume of tree limbs felled by an ice storm two weeks ago.
Residents can bring tree limbs to the Mid-County Landfill at the following times and days: from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The normal fee to drop off such debris is $38 per ton. But the Board of Supervisors decided to use general tax funds to pay for the tipping fees, rather than charging individuals, businesses or the Christiansburg and Blacksburg governments. People who already have paid tipping fees on storm debris will be reimbursed.
Landfill workers will be grinding up the storm debris into mulch. Normally there is a $15 per ton charge for the mulch, but the board voted to waive that fee, too, and give the mulch away to all takers.
The times and days when residents can pick up mulch are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The mulch giveaway will last until May 28.
