The shootings happened about 9:30 p.m. at the Lancer Truck Stop at Ironto, according to Sgt. Curtis Cook of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Details were sketchy, but authorities said they did not believe the incident was a robbery.
The names of the victims were not available. One was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was believed to have been taken by helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Shortly after the shooting, police followed a pickup truck to a remote spot on Poor Mountain Road in Roanoke County, where the driver apparently shot himself in the head with a handgun.
E.L. Goodwin, 55, whose address was not available, was being treated in the emergency room of Roanoke Memorial and was in critical condition, according to a nursing supervisor.
State Trooper Tim Steele said he followed Goodwin's pickup truck about four miles up Poor Mountain Road.
The truck swerved into a ditch and lost a tire, Steele said. It then veered back onto the road and went a a short distance before stopping again.
At that point, Steele said, the driver shot himself in the head. He was found slumped against the passenger's side door.
Staff writers Allison Blake and Kathy Loan contributed information to this story.
