GREENSBORO GRABS TITLE

Kevin Beard made a field goal with three seconds left in overtime Saturday night to give Greensboro the lead to stay as the Hornets held on to defeat Christopher Newport 120-119 and win the Dixie Conference men's basketball tournament.

Second-seeded Greensboro (24-3) advances to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Top-seeded Christopher Newport (22-4) was down 105-102 with 21 seconds left in regulation before Ted Berry hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Christopher Newport tied it at 116 with 16 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Jo-Jo Chambers. Beard then shot his field goal and James Snipes made two foul shots to go up 120-116.

Berry hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Hornets got 27 points from Beard, 26 points from Cory White and 18 from Snipes.

The Captains got 36 points from Berry, 28 from Chambers and 14 from Phil Williams.
