The Seahawks (5-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 13-9 lead, then withstood Tech's rally. A three-run homer by Bryan Britt highlighted UNC Wilmington's surge.
Tech scored three times in the top of the ninth, before reliever Dixon Putnam got David Fitt to ground out to the mound with bases loaded to end the game.
The Hokies (0-2) had led 7-1 going into the bottom of the second and extended it to 9-3.
Tech had 16 hits. Second baseman Justin Dobson went 4-for-6, all singles; Fitt had two doubles and a home run and drove in four runs; Matt Reynolds, a redshirt freshman from William Byrd had a double two singles for one RBI; and freshman Kevin Barker hit a three-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat and finished with two hits and four RBI.
Tech is scheduled to play Liberty in Blacksburg at 3 p.m. today.

In Atlanta, Ferrum defeated Oglethorpe 12-0 in a semifinal of the Reebok Invitational.
Freshman Jimmy Hamilton (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings for the Panthers (2-0) before being relieved by David Campbell. Jason Williams followed Campbell, and Greg Purdue finished as Oglethorpe dropped to 1-7.
Ferrum third baseman Chad Maddux hit a two-run homer in the third inning, left fielder Chad France went 3-for-5 and catcher Jason St. Clair of Cave Spring High School went 2-for-3.
Ferrum, which opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Emory on Saturday, plays for the championship today at noon against Hanover (Ind.).
In Radford, Andy Fitzpatrick had three goals and two assists to lead Butler to a 15-8 victory over Radford in Chris Swanenburg's debut as the Highlanders' lacrosse coach.
The Bulldogs built a 9-0 halftime lead before Radford (0-1) rallied behind three goals and one assist from John Robinson.
