There were no initial reports of injuries.
Country club members managed to roll a dozen gas-powered golf carts away from flames and get into the locker room to begin pitching some golf clubs to safety.
Members also managed to disconnect some propane tanks next to the clubhouse.
Club members Larry Cowley and his wife, Patti, entered the building with a firefighter to save a painting of the golf course done by local artist and club member Vance Miller.
The fire was believed to have started in the kitchen area of the clubhouse, according to initial reports from fire officials.
The first calls came in to the Blacksburg Fire Department about 10:30 Sunday night. Firefighters from Blacksburg and Christiansburg were called in to combat the blaze.
An hour after the first calls came in, the building, located on Country Club Drive on a hillside above the Ellett Valley, was still engulfed in flames.
"I'm sure it looks like a dead loss," said Sally Stephenson, a member of the board of directors who lives near the club.
