BURNETTE, Barney A., 71, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 30, 1994, in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Barney L. Burnette and a sister, Virginia B. Tolley. He was employed by Kroger and was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Lois C. Burnette; his mother, Nannie J. Burnette, Forest; sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Karen Burnette, Cloverdale, Alvin E. CUMMINGS, Margaret English, 87, of Rocky Mount, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 1994, in Franklin Memorial Hosptial. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Earl Cummings. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Barbara Cummings, three grandsons and their wives, Calvin and Susan Cummings, Jeff and Elaine Cummings; Tim and Lori Cummings; two great-granddaughter, Ashley and Katie Cummings; her sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Dick Dillard, Clarksburg, W.Va.; one sister-in-law, Lorna English, Richmond; five nieces and a very dear special friend, Betty Radford. Through selling Avon she has many wonderful friends, too many to name, but each of you know who you are, and we thank you for being there for her. She served in the United States Air Force and belong to the Disabled American Veterans and the Paralyze American Veterans. Richard Martin of Hagerstown, Md., in addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Robert Curran; one son, Robert Curran Jr.; two daughters, Ashley and Crystal Curran all of Winter Park, Fla.; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, R. Eugene and Janice Martin, Callaway, Stephen J. and Esther Martin, Hagerstown, Md., Hoyt M. and Deana Martin Hagerstown, Md., Daniel H. GIPSON, Lewis Lee (``Hoot''), 63, of Route 6, Wheatland Road, Bedford died Thursday, March 31, 1994 at his home. He was born in Orange County, Virginia on July 23, 1930, son of the late Roy Boxley Gipson and Nettie Sue McCleary Gipson. He was a retired employee of Rubatex Corp. and a member of Thaxton Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Gladys McGuire Gipson, his twin sister, Lois Gipson Bragg, of Huddleston, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 1994 at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal and the Rev. Johnson Gupton officiating. HAIRSTON, Amanda Lundy, of Roanoke, departed this life on Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. Mrs. Hairston, a native of Petersburg, Va., was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Wells and John D. Lundy. She was an active member of Gillfield Baptist Church, under the pastorship of the late Rev. Samuel A. Brown. After her move to Roanoke, she was affiliated with the First Baptist Church and worked diligently until her decline in health. She received her early education in the Petersburg public schools and at Daniel Webster Davis High School, located at Virginia State College. She attended Dixie School of Nursing at Hampton Institute and Petersburg Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her LPN license. She was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Nursing Corps at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She was employed at McGuire Veterans Hospital and other local hospitals in the Richmond area. After relocating to Roanoke, Va., she worked at several hospitals and continued to volunteer her services after her retirement. She was a strong supporter of the Kidney Foundation. She leaves to cherish her memory, a very devoted husband, Mr. James Hairston; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ressie Bond of Roanoke; two devoted sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace and Willie Wright and Marian (Peggy) and Ernest Walker of Ettrick, Va.; a devoted cousin, Richard E. Lundy of Petersburg, Va.; and three very devoted friends in the Roanoke area, Doris Laman, Naomi Hickman and Elizabeth Stevenson; and many others friends and relatives. Memorial services will be held noon Saturday, April 2, 1994, at the First Baptist Church on N. Jefferson St. The Rev. Kenneth B. Wright will officiate. Born February 26, 1930 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Jesse and Mary Isabel Yantz Hartley. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired plumber and a member of the Lexington Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Rogers Hartley. JENNINGS, Lillian Beatrice Galbraith, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at South Roanoke Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born October 12, 1904, at Draper, Va., in Pulaski County, the daughter of the late, Mr. and Mrs. William Bartrom Galbraith. An honor gr aduate of Radford College with graduate study at Hollins College, Roanoke College and the University of Virginia, she taught and was principal of numerous schools for a period of 45 years in Newbern, Va., Floyd County and at Ogden, Oakland and Burlington Schools in Roanoke and Andrew Lewis High School in Salem. Her long career included Mountain Mission work in Pulaski County for the State Department of Education and the teaching of private music lessons, math, science, world geography and English. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Mark Howard Jennings. She and her husband were members of Melrose Baptist Church in Roanoke County, having been baptized there in 1927. She was a member of the Roanoke Fine Arts Club, the Home Demonstration Club, Roanoke County Womens Club, Electa Chapter #33 Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, the Aremes Guild and devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She is survived by her son, John Ray Jennings, Roanoke; sister, Edith Galbraith Honaker, Draper; numerous nieces, nephews and loving friends. PATTESON, Harry Thomas, 91, of Richlands, died Wednesday in Ridgeway, S. C. following a lengthy illness. He was born in Vivian, W. Va. and was a son of the late Nathaniel Preston and Ardenia Fredrica Camper Patteson. He had made his home in the Richlands, Va. area for most of his life and was a past Mayor and served on the Town Council of Richlands, Va. He was retired plant manager of the F. H. Hill Casket Company in Richlands, Va. He was also a past employee of the First National Bank in Richlands and a past employee of Jewell Ridge Coal Corp., Jewell Ridge, Va. He was an active member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church, where he served as Clerk of the Session for 38 years. He was an Elder, a Deacon, and a member of the Men of the Church and the Men's Bible Class. He was a charter member of the Richlands Rotary Club. He was a 60 years member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318, A.F. and A. M. of Richlands and was also an honorary member of the Lodge. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of his generation. In addition to his parents, his wife, Thelma Williams Patteson and one son, Thomas L. Patteson, preceded him in death. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. W. G. ``Betty"" Jackson, Cedar Bluff; one son, the Rev. Thomas L. Patteson, Ridgeway, S. C.; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning April 2, 1994, at 11 a.m. in the Richlands Presbyterian Church at Richlands, with the Rev. Dr. Curtis Fussell and the Rev. Dr. James B. Hollenhead officiating. Graveside services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski, Va. Pallbearers will be Louis H. Hunter, W. G. Jackson Jr., Thomas P. Jackson, H. R. Patteson Jr., David Patteson, Crockett Lowe, Kevin Hyde, Michael Janaskie and Thomas L. Patteson Jr. Elders and men of the Richlands Presbyterian Church wi ll serve as honorary pallbearers. PERRY, R. Christopher, 44, of Lewis, Ind., died suddenly Wednesday, March 23, 1994, in Terre Haute, Indiana of meningitis. Survivors include his wife, Laura Keyes Perry; son, Malcolm both of Lewis, Indiana; brother, Jeff of Alpharella, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Perry was a political science professor at Indiana State University and previously taught at University of Alabama, College of Wooster, Ohio, University of Mankta, Minnesota, University of Minnesota and Murray State University in Kentucky. He received his bachelor's degree from Kentucky University and his doctorate from University of Minnesota. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity. A memorial service was held in Terre Haute on March 26, 1994, at the Centenary United Methodist Church. A burial service w ill be held in Roanoke at Evergreen Memorial Park this Saturday, April 2, 1994, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. John Virkler of Richmond, Virginia officiating. YOST, John W., Dr., 64, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 1994 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Peery Yost and his mother, Lucy Virginia Yost. In preparation for his medical career he attended King College in Bristol, Va. and MCV of Richmond. He was a past member of the Vinton Lions Club and served as physician for William Byrd High School Athletics and Booster Club, also was attending physician for many residents at Berkshire Nursing Home. He served his internship at Lewis-Gale Hospital and successfully practiced for 30 years in Vinton. Surviving are one son, J. Robert Yost, Vinton; one daughter, Martha Yost Gordon, Montvale; two brothers, Lt. Col. Ret. James Frank Yost , San Antonio, Texas, Joseph Daniel Yost, Tazewell, Va.; one sister, Virginia Y.
