RAIDERS KICK CELTICS 4-0

Forrest Porterfield scored one goal and set up another as North Cross beat visiting Roanoke Catholic 4-0 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' soccer game Thursday.

Mark Wise added a goal and anchored the defense for the Raiders (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the VIC). The Celtics slipped to 1-5, 0-1.

Brad Shearer and David Thornhill scored two goals each as Salem (1-1-1) beat host Patrick Henry 6-3 in a boys' lacrosse game.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke lost a semifinal match to Max Hilkey of Chapel Hill, N.C., 6-4, 6-4 in the 14-and-under division of the U.S. Tennis Association's Easter Bowl tournament in Miami. Hippensteel will play Miami's Nicholas Boeker at 1 p.m. today for third place.

Richmond football coach Jim Marshall has added three assistants to his staff. Ken Flajole, who spent the past five years as a defensive coach at Missouri, takes over as defensive coordinator; Frank Leonard, who spent the past three years as the linebackers coach at Connecticut, will be the offensive line coach; and Matt Griffin will be the wide receivers coach. Griffin was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Plymouth (N.H.) State the past two years.

In Amherst, Gayle Avery scored three goals and Kathleen Ostar had 17 saves as Roanoke College beat Sweet Briar 8-3 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game.

Seniors Sean Bell from Norfolk State and David Saunders of Hampton were named to the 10-member team of basketball players from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association that will play in the Second Annual Black College All-Star Weekend April 15 in Norfolk.

Other players named to the team included four starters from Virginia Union's CIAA championship team: Warren Peebles, Derrick Johnson, Reggie Jones and Troy Phillips. Elizabeth City's Nate Higgs, Bowie's Brian Brooks, North Carolina Central's Jimmie Walker and Virginia State's Kevin Holleman were the other selections.

William and Mary women's basketball coach Trina Thomas signed a new three-year $50,000 contract, athletic director John Randolph said. Thomas, 28, earned Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors this season.
