NAMES ON CAMPUS

HOWARD FEIERTAG has been selected as a fellow of the 1994 Board of Trustees for the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Motel Association. He is a faculty member in the department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. Feiertag also was the guest speaker at the 1994 International Convention of Super 8 Motels, Inc. in San Francisco, Ca.

ANGELA JUSTICE a senior double-major in psychology and sociology, was recently named the national "Cooperative Education Student of the Year" and is a recipient of the Cooperative Education Association's $1,000 scholarship. She received the award at an annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. Angela won the award based on her work with NASA in Washington D.C., her academic success as a commonwealth scholar in the University Honors Program, and her involvement with many student organizations.

Alumni Distinguished professor of chemistry JAMES WIGHTMAN received an award from the Adhesive and Sealant Council at its annual convention.

CHARLES SCHUMANN of Blacksburg recently completed his masters degree in computer science. He will work as a software engineer at Hercules, Inc.

ZACHARY STOUMBOS of Blacksburg received a doctorate in statistics and will be a visiting associate professor in the statistics department at the University of South Carolina. He is the son of Constantine and Vasiliki Stoumbos.

DICK HASSELMAN, Whittemore professor of materials science and engineering was elected to the position of fellow of the International Thermal Conductivity conferences. J. MICHAEL DUNCAN a University Distinguished professor of civil engineering has been selected the 1994 Sigma Xi Monie A. Ferst Medalist. This national award, given to a scientist or engineer, includes a medal and $5,000.

WING NG a professor of mechanical engineering, was recently appointed to serve as a member of the National Aeronautics Advisory Committee.

WAYNE WORNER and DAVID PARKS, professors of educational administration in the College of Education, received a $122,000 grant from the Danforth Foundation in support of the National Alliance for Developing School Leaders. The grant will be used to improve the quality of programs which prepare school leaders.

DOUG SOUTHARD, associate professor of health education in the College of Education, was elected vice-president for organizational policy for the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

MAJOR GARY JACKSON recently graduated from Command and General Staff College by correspondence. Major Jackson is currently assigned to the Army ROTC Battalion at Virginia Tech and Radford University.

The Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery was presented to JOHN A.N. LEE for his many years of service to the association.

I.J. GOOD, a University Distinguished professor in statistics, has been elected to membership in the International Order of Merit, an honor limited to 500 people worldwide.

The Director of YMCA Student Programs, BARBARA HOLCOMB is the recipient of the Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League Catalyst Award, also called the VA-COOL Award. The award is given to persons who integrate community service with academic curriculum.

LUCINDA ROY, formerly the assistant dean for special projects, has been named associate dean for curriculum, outreach and diversity. ROBERT PATERSON, former interim dean, is now serving as associate dean for graduate studies, research and facilities until he retires in June.
