THE TIPOFF

WORLD VIEW: Norman Myers, an internationally renowned environmentalist, will speak Monday and Tuesday nights at 7 at the Donaldson Brown Center on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.

Admission is free.

Myers, a dynamic speaker, won the 1992 Volvo Environment Award. He advises governments, development agencies and scientific organizations on issues ranging from global warming and the population explosion to the future of our economies and the idea of one-world living.

At Tech, he'll discuss the United States' role in the global environment and the consequences of tropical forest loss on our future. For info, call 231-5483.

ART MART: Sunday Art is the name of V Magazine's effort to promote downtown Roanoke and artists from the area. The idea is simple, with artists occupying the City Market between 1 and 5 each Sunday afternoon, so browsers and shoppers can see their stuff. The promotion will continue through Sept. 25. Call 342-2028 for details.

WARM: ``Charlotte's Web,'' the enchanting tale by E.B. White, comes to Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke as a children's musical opening Tuesday and continuing through April 17. Show times are 7:30 on Thursdays, 4:30 and 7:30 on Fridays, 10 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 and 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets are $3 for children and $6 for adults. The box office number is 342-5740.

PLAY BALL: The Salem Buccaneers open their Carolina League season Thursday night at 7 against the Frederick Keys at Municipal Field in Salem. The four-game series runs through April 10. If the Bucs can create as much of a stir on the field as they have off the field of late, they'll have a big season.

Box seats are $5, reserved seats $4 and general admission $3. Senior citizens and children age 12 and under pay $1 less. Call 389-3333.

UNIFORM CASTING: Hollins College Theatre will present Stephen Schwartz's ``Godspell'' from Thursday through April 9 with an all-female cast, which is a change. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday nights and 1 and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Call 362-6517.

RISK TAKERS: Thursday and April 8, the TheaterSports team of Charlottesville will present an evening of improvisation like those found in leagues all over the world. It will be at Live Arts in Charlottesville at 8 o'clock each night.

The format is this: teams of actors use competitive sports as a theatrical convention, improvising scenes from audience suggestions to win points or applause. Judges award the scores, and the fans boo or cheer according to their whim.

For details, call Mary Coy at (804) 263-8802.

WORTHY CAUSE: Lime Kiln Arts will present ``Munci Meg,'' the one-act play that's an Appalachian version of ``Cinderella,'' on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at the Glasgow Community Center. The proceeds will benefit the Concerned Citizens of Glasgow, who are raising money to repair damage the town's community center incurred during the stormy winter.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 11-17 and $1 for kids age 10 and under. Tickets are available at the Lime Kiln office in Lexington and at the Community Center in Glasgow. They will be sold at the door on Sunday starting at 2:30.

For information, call 258-2867 or 463-3074.

PLAYING GAMES: The Magic Mirror Theatre of Charlottesville will present Pierre Marivaux's comedy, ``The Game of Love and Chance,'' April 8-10 and April 14, 15 and 17 at the Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

It involves a couple of young people who seek to learn more about each other before their arranged marriage.

Performances are at 8 p.m., except on Sundays, when they are at 7. Tickets are $5 and $10, except April 17, when they are $5 and $7. For reservations, call (804) 973-2390.

RAUCOUSNESS: You can expect that at Lowell's Restaurant and Lounge in Roanoke Saturday night, when Wildman Steve shows off his brand of comedy. He's been on the ``Def Comedy Jam'' TV show. Doors open at 8, admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Call 344-4884.

LINE FORMS HERE: Tickets for the April 30th, nationwide public radio broadcast of ``Whad`Ya Know'' with Michael Feldman go on sale this morning at 9:30 at the Roanoke Civic Center box office and at Ticketmaster locations.

Tickets are $20 for orchestra and loge and $15 for balcony seating in the civic center auditorium. Orchestra and loge seats may be combined with a ticket to the first Roanoke Valley Shrimpfest set for that afternoon at the Salem Civic Center for a single price of $35 per person. The Atlanta Rhythm Section will play at the shrimp thing.

And Feldman? Well, he's a funny little guy with an odd little quiz show that makes for entertaining listening over WVTF (89.1 FM) in Roanoke each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you get tickets, you'll be asked to show up at 10:30 that day, so as to be in your place for the warm-up routines.
