CMT PLANS SUPERSTORE

CMT Sporting Goods said Friday it hopes to have a 54,000-square-foot superstore open by fall next door to its Brandon Avenue headquarters.

Cary Mangus, one of the owners, said site work has been started by Salem Contracting Co.

The new building will be on one level and will feature 18 specialty shops, each devoted to a specific sport, he said. The current building, which has 30,000 square feet, will become a shop for team supplies and trophies and for distribution and offices.

Mangus said the new facility will increase the company's selling space more than 50 percent chain-wide.

CMT was founded in 1970 by five Roanoke County residents - Mangus, Banks Conner, Charly Tull, Ed Cox, who has retired, and Richard Trent, now deceased. It has a second Roanoke Valley store at Tanglewood Mall and stores in Blacksburg, Lynchburg and Bristol, Tenn. The company also owns a screen print facility in Roanoke.

CMT has made Sports Trend Magazine's Top 100 retailers list for the past three years. It was 88th in the latest ranking, based on a sales volume of $13 million-plus. The company is private and does not give exact sales figures, however.

The company already has upgraded at other locations. The Blacksburg store, which opened in 1975, was replaced in 1985. The Lynchburg store opened in 1977 and was replaced in 1984, and an addition was added in 1991. The Bristol store opened in 1989 and moved to a new location in 1992.
