COUGARS START WITH LOSS

Chad Smith smacked a double and two singles as Cave Spring routed Pulaski County 16-2 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game Friday at Pulaski.

Robey Caldwell allowed one hit over four innings and struck out eight for the Knights (1-2 overall, 1-0 RVD). Cave Spring amassed 14 hits.

The Cougars are 0-1, 0-1.

At Rocky Mount, Franklin County defeated William Fleming 20-5 in the Roanoke Valley District opener for both teams. The Eagles (3-2 overall) were led by Riley Hodges, who had three hits in four trips with five RBI and three runs scored. He singled, tripled and homered. Clay Bailey was also 3-for-4 and David Webster had a pair of hits to knock in three runs.

Winning pitcher Jeff Hawks went 3-for-4 and threw five innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. Greg Hicks finished the game with five strikeouts.

Fleming's hits came from Tom Pendleton and Desmond Lee.

Jon Rogers had two hits and picked up the pitching win in relief with three innings of work as Bath County beat Craig County 7-2 in a baseball game at Hot Springs. Rogers (1-0) struck out four and allowed two hits and no runs for Bath County (3-0). Starter Kris Phillips struck out eight in four innings for Bath and allowed two runs.
