EAGLES RIP COLONELS

Host Franklin County defeated William Fleming 20-5 in the Roanoke Valley District baseball opener for both teams Friday.

The Eagles (3-2 overall) were led by Riley Hodges, who had three hits in four trips with five RBI and three runs scored. He singled, tripled and homered. Clay Bailey was also 3-for-4 while David Webster had two hits to knock in three runs.

Winning pitcher Jeff Hawks also went 3-for-4 and threw five innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. Greg Hicks finished the game with five strikeouts.

Fleming's hits came from Tom Pendleton and Desmond Lee.

In other baseball:

Chad Smith smacked a double and two singles as Cave Spring routed Pulaski County 16-2 in a Roanoke Valley District game at Pulaski. Robey Caldwell pitched four inning of one-hit ball and struck out eight for the Knights (1-2 overall, 1-0 RVD). Cave Spring amassed 14 hits. The Cougars are 0-1, 0-1.

At Bedford, Brookville (2-1 overall, 2-1 in the district) defeated Liberty 6-2 in a Seminole District game despite two hits by Brian Long. The Minutemen (1-4, 1-4) led 2-1 going into the fifth inning when the Bees got four walks and two hits to spark a three-run rally.

Jon Rogers had two hits and picked up the pitching win in relief with three innings of work as Bath County beat Craig County 7-2 at Hot Springs. Rogers (1-0) struck out four and allowed two hits and no runs for Bath County (3-0). Starter Kris Phillips struck out eight in four innings for Bath County and allowed two runs.

\ SOFTBALL: In Lynchburg, Shelly King struck out 13, but the Patrick Henry defense let her down as the Patriots lost 10-4 to E.C. Glass (2-1) in non-district softball. The junior right-hander gave up eight hits, but eight of the Hilltoppers' runs were unearned because of five errors by PH (1-3).

Heather Dooley had five hits, including a triple, for Liberty (2-2 overall, 2-1 district) as the Minettes defeated Brookville 14-3 in a Seminole District game. Dooley's sister, Melissa, had four hits and five RBI. Minettes pitcher Karla Goff struck out nine. Brookville (2-1, 2-1) was held to three hits.
