plane carring 78 passengers
LINTHICUM, Md. - The smell of household bug killer stored in a carry-on bag prompted authorities to evacuate an airliner and quarantine 78 passengers for about four hours Friday.
USAir's Flight 603 was taxiing toward a runway at Baltimore-Washington International Airport when a noxious smell coming from a passenger's bag wafted through the cabin. The plane was headed for New York's LaGuardia Airport.
A flight attendant alerted the captain, who conferred with air-traffic controllers before halting the flight, said airport spokesman Tony Storck. The airport fire marshal evacuated the plane and quarantined the passengers in an airport holding room.
A hazardous-materials crew went through the carry-on luggage and discovered a household insecticide that had leaked inside a passenger's bag, Storck said.

Biosphere backer fires company's senior officers
PHOENIX - The president and five other senior officers of the company that operates Biosphere 2 were fired Friday by the environmental experiment's financial backer, Texas billionaire Edward P. Bass.
Bass said in court papers he was unhappy with the venture's financial practices but couldn't get the ousted officers to restructure their management practices to his satisfaction.
He said in a news release issued Friday by Space Biospheres Ventures that he remains committed to continuing Biosphere 2 and believes it will prosper under restructuring. He declined to comment beyond the news release.
