STATE DEPT. OFFICIAL CRITICIZES ARISTIDE

A high-ranking State Department official has harshly criticized Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide for suggesting that the United States was involved in the 1991 coup that sent him into exile.

At a meeting two weeks ago in Miami with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Aristide asked, "How can we pretend the U.S. embassy wasn't involved in the coup?" according to an Associated Press report at the time.

Calling Aristide's remarks "unconscionable," U.S. special envoy Lawrence Pezzullo said Aristide should recognize the role then-U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Alvin Adams played in saving him. "The American ambassador, at risk to himself, saved the life of President Aristide," Pezzullo said.
