AMERICAN AID WORKER STILL HELD BY SOMALIS

Intensive negotiations failed to win the release Saturday of an American relief worker kidnapped by Somali gunmen. A U.N. worker from Nigeria seized the same day escaped his captors.

Alfred Peters, 36, a water and sanitation engineer from Denver, was kidnapped Thursday by gunmen who stopped his car a few hundred yards from a United Nations checkpoint. Peters had been sent to Mogadishu to help stem a cholera epidemic.
