NRV SPEEDWAY AWARD HONORS FORMER DRIVER

The Curtis Turner Memorial Hard-Charger Award has been established this year at New River Valley Speedway to honor the late stock car legend from Floyd.

The award was set up by Turner's widow, Carolyn "Bunny" Turner of Pulaski. It is being sponsored by R.B. Duncan and Heritage Inc., also of Pulaski. It will be presented weekly to the Late Model Stock Car driver who improves his position the most from start to finish of the LMSC feature. Official race results will be used to determine the winner.

"Since Curtis was born and raised in Floyd County and often raced at Pulaski [County Speedway] in his early career, I thought this award would be appropriate," Carolyn Turner said. "His reputation as a hard-charger is still remembered by those who raced against him or watched his daring moves on the speedway.

"The Late Model Stock Car competition at this track is as good, if not better, than any race track in the nation. I try not to miss a single race during the season. It will be interesting to see who wins this award each week and who will be the first annual winner."

Each winner will receive an engraved plaque featuring Turner on a valuable collectible card. From the weekly winners, a five-member panel will choose the annual recipient. Carolyn Turner and Duncan will present the annual plaque, plus a cash award, at the season-ending speedway banquet.

A large plaque will be placed in the track's main office and the name of the annual winner will be added to the plaque each year.

Turner drove stock cars from 1946 until 1970, when he died in a plane crash in Pennsylvania. He has been named to three halls of fame, including the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Ala.; the National Motorsports Hall of Fame in Darlington, S.C.; and the Hall of Legends in Los Angeles.
