Green drove a lap of 89.262 mph in a Chevrolet owned by Bobby Labonte, a former Grand National champion who now runs NASCAR's Winston Cup series full-time.
Ricky Craven, also driving a Chevy, took the other front-row spot at the .363-mile track with a lap of 89.062.
Johnny Rumley, upset winner in a 300-lap race here in the fall, qualified third in a Chevy. Completing the top five were Ford drivers Kenny Wallace and hometown favorite Tommy Houston.
Two-time Grand National champion Larry Pearson, runner-up in the circuit's past two superspeedway races, qualified 12th in a Chevy. Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader was 16th, also in a Chevy.
The green flag for the season's seventh Grand National race is scheduled to fall at 2 p.m. (TNN cable).
Wallace's qualifying run put him in position to take the lead from Terry Labonte in the series points race. Labonte, the 1984 Winston Cup champion, leads the title chase by 51 points over Wallace.
However, Labonte decided not to enter this race.
A 100-lap race for NASCAR's Late Model Stock division is to follow the 300.
The Winston Cup teams have an open date this weekend before running the annual spring series of short-track events the next three Sundays at Bristol (Tenn.) Raceway, North Wilkesboro Speedway and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
