HOKIES BREAK 4-GAME LOSING STREAK

Virginia Tech freshman reliever Charlie Gillian pitched two scoreless innings to lead the Hokies' 6-4 Metro Conference victory over Virginia Commonwealth in Blacksburg.

Tech took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring twice on back-to-back doubles by Bo Durkac and David Fitt and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Barker.

The Rams (18-9 overall, 3-2 Metro) cut their deficit to 5-4 in the seventh inning before Gillian came in to pick up his fifth save of the season. Starter Brian Fitzgerald (3-2) struck out five in seven full innings for the victory.

The Hokies (11-14, 3-4) snapped a four-game losing streak.

In Rock Hill, S.C., Radford split a doubleheader with Winthrop in Big South Conference action, winning the first game 9-8 and losing the second 4-2.

The Highlanders (12-12, 8-3) used a two-out, six-run rally in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead in the first game. Joe Raccuia was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI to lead Radford.

In Winchester, Kevin Anderson stuck out eight in 4 innings of relief work as Ferrum edged Shenandoah 11-8 in a Dixie Conference game. Chad France was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs, and Jason Wilson was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead Ferrum (16-2, 3-2).
