SO?!!

In the sewers of Odense, Denmark, 70,000 rats live. Pollution is killing marine life off the coast of Lynnwood, Wash.

This information is some received by three pupils at Dublin Middle School, who were researching water issues by contacting schools via computer in the United States, Canada and Denmark. Laura Boyd, Allison Cruise and Kellie Wheeling used telecommunication, or the process of communicating on a computer using a modem, to gather their information. A modem connects your computers to others through telephone lines.

Besides learning about water concerns in other parts of the world, the pupils did some local research. They contacted water companies in Pulaski County and asked officials at each what they thought was the most important water issue facing Southwest Virginia. Most of them said ground water contamination.

Dublin Middle School pupils have participated in several telecommunications projects this year. According to Bert Milburn, a seventh-grade teacher there, telecommunications has opened up a new world to his pupils.
