SUSPECT IN CARJACKING INDICTED ON 7 FELONIES

A Christiansburg man who police say carjacked a taxi in Blacksburg last fall only hours after being freed from jail has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on seven felonies.

Besides a carjacking charge, Marcus DeAngelo Williamson faces indictments accusing him of abducting and maliciously wounding a Christiansburg man shortly before the taxi incident, then maliciously wounding a Christiansburg officer by slamming into his patrol car on the top of Christiansburg Mountain.

Williamson also faces three firearms charges: two counts accuse him of using a gun to commit the abduction and malicious wounding, and a third charge of possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony.

Williamson, who was on parole for a cocaine conviction, had been freed from the Montgomery County Jail just hours before the taxijacking. He had been released after a felony shoplifting charge was dismissed in General District Court because a certified copy of his record was not available. He was later indicted by a grand jury on that shoplifting charge.

After Williamson was released from jail, he went to the home of an acquaintance, Darryl Scott Barker, and asked for a ride to the Walton community, according to testimony in an earlier court hearing. Barker said when he refused, Williamson pulled out a pistol and threatened him.

Barker said he and his roommate agreed to take Williamson anywhere if he would put away the gun. About 50 yards from the house, however, Barker said he heard the gun go off and realized he had been shot. He was later treated and released at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The roommate ran back toward the house, and Williamson walked away.

Dewey Moore, a 73-year-old taxi driver, picked up Williamson a short time later, according to his testimony at the earlier hearing. As they drove into Blacksburg, Williamson agreed to pay Moore in advance. But instead of pulling out his wallet, Williamson pulled a gun, Moore testified.

The gun went off and Moore jumped from the taxi, according to testimony. Moore wasn't shot; instead, Williamson had accidentally shot himself in the leg.

A police pursuit of the taxi raced through Montgomery County into Roanoke County and back before the taxi was stopped at the top of Christiansburg Mountain.
