Government to receive settlement

WASHINGTON - The government said Monday it will receive $1.4 million in a settlement of fraud charges against a shareholder of what was once one of the largest participants in federally guaranteed student loan and grant programs.

The settlement was reached with Paul L. Teeven, a minority shareholder of USA Training Academy Inc., and his wife, Louise, Assistant Attorney General Frank W. Hunger of the Justice Department's civil division said.

The agreement will bring the government's total recovery from the academy and its shareholders to $16 million.

A federal civil lawsuit had charged that USA Training falsely represented that it was eligible to participate in the Department of Education's Pell Grant program for post-secondary schooling. The lawsuit also said the school falsified records and failed to pay or delayed student refunds. It also participated in the department's Stafford guaranteed student loan program.

When the suit was filed, the government placed liens on more than half of Teeven's assets under the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.

Minority students more likely to mix

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Minority college students are more likely to eat, study and go out with people outside their race than white students are, a study says.

The researchers who conducted the study say it debunks the idea that minorities socialize only among themselves. In fact, the researchers say, the study shows that white students are most likely to stick together.

``The current concern about whether minority students are promoting and practicing self-segregation is misplaced,'' said Sylvia Hurtado, an assistant professor of education at the University of Michigan. ``In fact, students of color are crossing ethnic-racial lines the most, while white students seem to be segregating themselves.''
