A PLACE TO SPEND THE DAY

They start the morning with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. They garden, read, bake, visit, sing, relax, watch movies. They are participants at the Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center.

Opened in December of 1992, the center offers a safe setting for adults who are unable to stay alone, and provides a way for respite for caregivers. Nursing assistants are on staff, and a nurse in on call at all times. A support service for family members is provided, along with monthly Caregiver Support Group meetings.

Participants range in age from 33 to 104. Some visit every day, some just a couple of days each week. Others come for half-days. The center is open weekdays 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Potential participants are assessed and an individual plan of care is developed for their needs. Current rates are $25 per day, which includes snacks and a hot lunch, and $18 for a half-day.
