ASHWELL, Effie Mae, 81, of Huddleston, passed away, Wednesday, April 6, 1994, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born October 23, 1912, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Will Judd Ashwell and Cora Nichols Ashwell. She was a member of the Patmos United Methodist Church. She is survived by two brothers, Odell Ashwell, Huddleston, Buford Ashwell, Altavista. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 8, 1994, 2 p.m. from the Patmos United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Huddleston and request that those wishing to make memorials consider the Patmos United Methodist Church.

BANKS, Arnold Thomas, 78, of Rt. 2, Meadows of Dan, Va. died Wednesday, April 6, 1994, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was a veteran of World War II in the Marine Corps and Founder and Co-owner of Agee and Banks General Store and Meadows of Dan Farm Service. Born 1916 to the late James Banks and the late Lona Jessup Banks. He is survived by one daughter, Janet Faye Banks-Boyd of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Harlon and Jerry Banks both of Meadows of Dan, Va. and Ronnie Banks of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Jessie Mackall of Fla., Eloise Stanley and Loraine Joyce both of Martinsville, Va.; children and two great-grandchildren also survives. Funeral services for Mr. Arnold Banks will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Reed Island Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. His body rests at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart until placed in the Reed Island Springs Baptist Church at 5 p.m. Friday.

BISHOP, Ida Ellen, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday , April 5, 1994, in a Shawsville nursing home. She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Richard Horne with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Friends may callat Richardson-Horne.

BOGGESS, Florence Gwaltney, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 1994 at Camelot Nursing Home on her 87th birthday. She had retired as a nurse from Community Hospital and was a member of the West Side Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Carl S. Boggess. She is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Charles T. and Pat Gwaltney of Salem, Russell E. and Rita Gwaltney of Dublin, Douglas M. and Linda Hawkins of Roanoke County; six grandchildren, Annette Shrader, Charlene Guard, Rusty Gwaltney, Renee Moore, Florence Hawkins, Rene Orange; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn Underwood; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Radford, both of Floyd. A funeral service will be held at the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem on Friday, April 8 at 11 a.m. with Mr. Floyd Bailey and Mr. Tim Shoulders. Burial will follow at the Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

CALDWELL, C.T., (""Ted""), 89, of Roanoke, died Monday, April 4, 1994, in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jonnie Huffman Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell was a retired employee of Hollins College. Surviving are his brother, Jack A. Caldwell, Independence; nieces, Jane Ward, Craig County, Sherry McLain, Greensboro, N.C. CARPER, Kim, 29, of Orange, N.J., passed away Sunday, April 3, 1994, in St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston, N.J. COMBS, Hazel Fitch, 74, of Natural Bridge, died Tuesday, April 5, 1994, in a Washington, D.C. hospital. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Odie Fitch and the late Mrs. Willie Burks Fitch of Indian Rock. Surviving are a son, Charles M. Combs Jr., Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Mrs. Mary C. Inoussa, Silver Spring, Md., Mrs. Frances C. Scott, District Heights, Md., Ms. Regina Combs, Roanoke, Ms. Doris Combs, Fort Washington, Md.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Erie Sanderson, Dale City, Mrs. Fotomack Burks, Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Martha Craft, Columbia, Md.; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. DELAP, Lyle E., MD 83, of Narrows, died Tuesday, April 5, 1994, at Giles Memorial Hospital. He was born in Delavan, Wis., on February 1, 1911, a son of Howard McKinsie Delap and Lena Christina Baumbach. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1939 with a BS in Medical Science and received his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1942. After serving as a Captain in the U. S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, he settled in Giles County where he practiced as a physician. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, William and Homer; twin brother, Lester, and daughter Carole. He is survived by his wife, Helen Matuszczyk Delap; son, Lyle E. Delap, Jr., Roxboro, N.C.; daughters, Linda D. Delap, Arlington, Nancy D. Lanier, Williamsburg and Susan E. Delap, Narrows; a sister, Goldie Carlson, Delavan, Wis.; six g randchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favority charity. FIDLER, Matthew Craig, (``Matt""), 17, of 1512 Layden Cove Way, Virginia Beach, died Saturday, April 2, 1994 in Hopetown, Bahamas. He was an 11th grade student at Frank W. Cox High School and employed a t Beach Pet Hospital. He was a member of the Frank W. Cox High School Varsity Soccer Team, Beach F. C. Patriots Soccer Team, and Beach F. C. Travel Soccer team for 10 years. He is survived by his parents, Patricia A. Fidler and Charles T. Fidler, Virginia Beach; one brother, Scott D. Fidler; maternal grandmother, Marion H. McClain, Alva, Okla.; paternal grandmother, Doris P. Hicks, Virginia Beach; paternal great-grandmother, Mary E. LAMBERT, John D., 94, of Christiansburg, died early Wednesday, April 6, 1994, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Underwood Lambert and for many years was self-employed as a welder and mechanic.
