Woollum coached for 19 years at Bucknell, guiding the Bison to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He replaces Chuck Swenson, who was fired.
"I feel we are bringing the best possible leader in Charlie Woollum," said John Randolph, William and Mary's athletic director.
Overall, Woollum compiled a 318-221 record at Bucknell. The Lewisburg, Pa., school had 13 winning seasons under Woollum.
The Bison were 10-17 during the 1993-1994 season.
Swenson compiled a 62-134 record in seven seasons with the Tribe.
Woollum is a native of Alexandria and a 1962 graduate of William and Mary.
