The Hokies (12-16) trailed 5-2 going to the bottom of the eighth, but they rallied for two runs in that inning and two in the ninth to snap a six-game winning streak by the Monarchs (28-4).
Kevin Barker led off the ninth with a double for Tech, but was thrown out at third on a bunt by Justin Dobson. Smith's triple drove in Dobson with the tying run, and Old Dominion walked the bases loaded intentionally to set up a potential double play. After Bryan King struck out, Denis McLaughlin's pitch sailed behind Hokies batter David Fitt.
Sean Hummel (4-2) picked up the victory with one-third of an inning's work, and McLaughlin (1-1) took the loss.

Roanoke outscored visiting Lynchburg 13-3 in the second half to pull away for a 22-9 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse.
James Kammerman led the Maroons, ranked 11th in the latest NCAA Division III poll, with four goals. Brett Smith had two goals and five assists, J.J. Blatt accounted for three goals and two assists and Erik Daly scored three goals for Roanoke (5-4 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC).
Brent Meyer and Mike Marchetti led Lynchburg (7-3, 2-2) with three goals and one assist each.
In Radford, Alex Vaxmonsky went 2-for-4 with one run and four RBI as Radford defeated West Virginia 9-5 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader. The Mountaineers (16-8) won the first game 5-2.
Denny Van Pelt had two RBI and scored three runs for the Highlanders (15-13). Terry Rooney (3-0) earned the victory with two innings of hitless relief.
In Fredericksburg, Francesca Foord-Kelsey and Gail Avery scored four goals each to lead Roanoke to a 16-5 rout of Mary Washington in women's lacrosse.
Liz Florence added five assists for the Maroons (6-2). Mary Washington's record is 3-5.
