In a separate incident several hours later, a 62-year-old man walking on the 500 block of Fourth Street Southeast was beaten with a lead pipe by four young men, according to Roanoke police.
Harold Denny Perkins was in stable condition at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem with three stab wounds to his right arm.
According to police, Perkins was confronted by four teen-agers, who also struck him in the head with a pipe.
The attackers took Perkins' wallet, which contained $5, then fled in a car.
James Edward Turner of the 400 block of Fourth Street Southeast told police that about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday he was jumped by four teen-age males.
The youths first said, "We know you, old man," then struck Turner in the nose and neck with a pipe and took $80 from him.
Turner was taken to Community Hospital, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said there was no record of his being treated.
