RELIGION BRIEFS

ST. MARK'S LUTHERAN CHURCH has chosen the Rev. John M. Hawn of Albemarle, N.C., as its next pastor. He is 57 and has been pastor of First Lutheran Church in North Carolina for 18 years. Hawn will succeed the Rev. Charles Easley, who became chaplain at Brandon Oaks retirement center last fall.

A native of North Carolina, Hawn also has served at churches in Hendersonville, N.C., and Ashville. He is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C.

\ GRACE CHURCH, an evangelical Christian congregation at 2731 Edgewood St. S.W., has scheduled its annual Women's Retreat for April 29-30. Carol Arnold, wife of a former pastor of the church, will lead the workshop. She and her husband, Jack, live in Winter Park, Fla.

The retreat, with a theme of "Talk Worthy," will begin at 6 p.m. with an optional sleep-over. Hours for the following day will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $20 cost includes a Friday night dinner. Registration is due by Sunday. Call 982-0904 for more information.

\ A BOSNIAN REFUGEE FAMILY is expected to arrive in Roanoke later this month under sponsorship of Second Presbyterian Church. A $1,500 fund for the family's early expenses is being raised. The four-person Mehmedovic family includes a couple, their 10-year-old son and an older woman relative.

\ VIRGINIA HEIGHTS BAPTIST CHURCH will mark its 75th anniversary on April 17 at 11 a.m. After the service, members and friends will go to the Sheraton-Airport for a luncheon at 1. Reservations for the $10 meal are due by Monday and may be made by sending a check to the church, marked for the luncheon.

\ AT CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., the choir under the direction of Blanche H. Henning and with Thomas Baugh III at the organ, will perform April 17 at 3 p.m. The program, which is free, will include "Rejoice in the Lamb" by Benjamin Britten and "Little Organ Mass" by Franz Joseph Haydn.

The REV. HARRY LELAND, pastor of Crystal Spring Baptist Church, will lead revival services Sunday at 11 a.m. and nightly through Wednesday at Roanoke Avenue Baptist Church, 2202 Roanoke Ave. S.W. The Singing Servants will provide music.

\ DEACONS AND DEACONESSES of Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., have planned a joint anniversary service for Sunday at 4 p.m. The Rev. Antonio Thomas and the choir of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church will lead the worship.

\ MARY ELEANOR PICKETT, a member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, has received the Valiant Woman award from Church Women United, an ecumenical organization in which she has been active for many years. Pickett, the first woman to serve on Roanoke City Council about 40 years ago, is the second woman to receive the award in the 54 years of the group. She is credited with reviving Church Women United during the past four years.

\ THE PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITY CENTER, an inner city Roanoke ministry that is supported by many churches, helped more than 2,000 families last year with utilities, rent and prescriptions. In addition, 1,250 households were given food orders. More than 3,500 children were helped in these homes, according to \ Pat Dillard, director of the center. Some families in counties surrounding Roanoke were part of the total.
