KIWANIS CLUBS HONOR CHAMPS

The Kiwanis Clubs of Salem and Botetourt County gave their top boys' basketball honors to Salem's Charlie Morgan and Mark Byington, and official L.B. Wood at a banquet last Thursday night at the Salem Civic Center.

Morgan, whose Salem team won the Group AA state championship, was named coach of the year while Byington was the player of the year. In all, 11 schools participated in the awards.

Wood was given the Rex Mitchell award as the top basketball official. The award is named for the late Rex Mitchell, a long-time official in the Roanoke Valley.

Salem High was the recepient of the Sportsmanship Award voted on by the Western Virginia Officials' Association.

The Kiwanis All-Star team, headed by Byington, includes William Fleming's Derrick Hines, Patrick Henry's Shannon Taylor, Northside's Nathan Hungate and Cave Spring's Matt Matheny.

The unsung heroes from each school, who were also given awards, are:

Grant Kittelson, Cave Spring; Nick Varney, Glenvar; Isaac Minnis, James River; Billy Arthur, Lord Botetourt; Robbie Rea, North Cross; Brian Burnette, Northside; Eugene Cook, Patrick Henry; Miachel Wierzbic, Roanoke Catholic; Bryan Monroe, Salem; Mike McGuire, William Byrd; and Keath Hampton, William Fleming.
