RELIGION BRIEFS

WHEATLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, between Buchanan and Fincastle, has received the Rev. Jeff Marble as its new pastor. He succeeds the Rev. B. Daniel Whitener Jr.

Marble, who came from Pueblo, Colo., where he served King of Kings Lutheran Church, is a graduate of Newberry College and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. He began his ministry in Luray before going to Colorado.

\ AIRLEE COURT BAPTIST CHURCH members have voted to equip their buildings for the disabled by installing an elevator and renovating restrooms. The project is expected to be completed by August.

\ THE MALE CHORUS of Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W., will sing at Morning Star Baptist Church of Rocky Mount Sunday at 3 p.m.

Also, at Maple Street, the youth will sponsor a walk through the Northwest community on April 16, beginning at 8 a.m. The walk, in which youth of other churches have been invited to join, is to call attention to the benefits church involvement can provide. Call 343-3880 for more information.

\ REVIVAL SERVICES are scheduled Sunday through Tuesday at Melrose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 4807 Cove Road N.W. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale of Decatur, Ga., will preach nightly at 7.

\ DEACONS AND DEACONESSES of Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., have planned a joint anniversary service for Sunday at 4 p.m. The Rev. Antonio Thomas and the choir of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church will lead the worship.

\ MARY ELEANOR PICKETT, a member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, has received the Valiant Woman award from Church Women United, an ecumenical organization in which she has been active for many years. Pickett, the first woman to serve on Roanoke City Council about 40 years ago, is the second woman to receive the award in the 54 years of the group. She is credited with reviving Church Women United during the past four years.

\ KEN HEMPHILL, church growth director for the Southern Baptist Convention, will lead a Bible conference Friday through Sunday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church near Vinton. The event will begin with a banquet at the Holiday Inn-Civic Center on Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's workshop from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. also will include participants from Bonsack, Green Ridge, Hollins Road, North Roanoke, Rainbow Forest and Riverdale Baptist congregations.

Hemphill also will preach at Mineral Springs Sunday at 11 a.m.

\ THE PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITY CENTER, an inner city Roanoke ministry that is supported by many churches, helped more than 2,000 families last year with utilities, rent and prescriptions. In addition, 1,250 households were given food orders. More than 3,500 children were helped in these homes, according to \ Deadline for religion briefs for Neighbors is Thursday.
