NEW RIVER PEOPLE NAMES

LARRY LINKOUS, chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, was among the graduating class of the third annual Virginia County Board Chairmen's Institute. The institute included 12 hours of instruction over a two-day period.

MICHAEL DOWELL has been named the new director of the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley. DEBRA NAHARIN is the new president of the board and ANN BOLT will be vice-president. MARK WIGGINTON is treasurer and AILEEN FLETCHER will continue as secretary.

The 11th Annual Rebecca Orr Memorial Piano Festival was held this year and the winners were: FELIX KIM, SONYA SCHUMANN, JEANNE SCHUMANN, CINDY LIU, MONIKA OYAMA, DENISE LAW, EUNICE KIM, APON CHEN, FRANKLIN SHAW, BETH HERR, PHYLLIS CHEN and KAY CASTAGNOLI. WARREN LEE, a senior at Blacksburg High School, was awarded the 1994 Rebecca Orr Memorial Scholarship.

Several local artists recently had their artwork displayed by the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge 15th Annual Roanoke City Art Show. They were: KAZHIA KOLB, Riner; JOHN ONDERDONK, MARY IRWIN MOORE and GLORIA HEATH, Blacksburg; PAT WEST, Pembroke; JAMES KNIPE, ANNA FARIELLO and CHARLIE BROUWER, Radford.

KIP KENYON, son of Nick and Velma Kenyon, was recognized by earning 30 merit badges as an Eagle Scout. Kip is a sophomore at Blacksburg High School and he participates in wrestling and football.

TINA VAUGHAN of Christiansburg is the author of "Rachel and Her Mother Needed Positive Reinforcement" an article published in"Gifted Child Today" magazine. The article is about Vaughan's teaching experiences with a former student adn her parent.

Four members of the Mount Tabor 4-H Vaulters placed in a recent Nine Barrel and Ground Championships. JESSICA BRANDOM, SHEVAUN BRANDOM and CASSIE STOEVENER of Blacksburg and AMELIA SCHWAB of Christiansburg placed in ther respective events, even though they have only been members of the vaulting team for less than a year.

CHARLES SAPLAK, a writer from Radford, recently had his story, "Lady's Portrait, Executed in Archaic Colors," selected as "The Year's Best Horror XXII."

SHARON MILLER, the daughter of Judy Smoot Atkinson of Fairlawn and daughter-in-law of Iva Lane Miller of Christiansburg, was recently given the Virginia Alliance for Arts Education Distinguished Service Award at a teacher in-service in Gate City. Miller, who lives in Kingsport, Tenn. with her husband Larry, teaches at Gate City Middle and High School. While in the New River Valley, she taught at Floyd County High School and Floyd Elementary School.

Playmakers and Company recently selected its cast for Steve Brown's musical, "Road to Paradise." The members are JOHN LAWSON, KEN MARSHALL, SHARON DONAHUE, NORA HANSEN, MAUREEN CRUMPTON, MICHAEL NEWNAM, BOB GRIBBEN, NICHOLAS TINKER, MIKE VAUGHAN, JONATHAN KING, BARBARA LLOYD, MICHAEL CREAMER, KELLY ANN BURFIEND, DINA ROMANO, KRYSTA BAKER, SARAH SHOEMAKER and TERRY HOFFMAN.

The Blacksburg Branch of the American Association of University Women elected the following officers: KATHERINE GRAHAM, program vice-president; ELLEN GLOVER, treasurer; JANET DAUSCHER, membership vice-president and NANCY FELCH, recording secretary. PAULA WILDER will continue to serve as president. Other committee members are: IDA COMPARIN, JO WIECYZYNSKI, KATHY TERLESKY, BARBARA RUYS, PHYLLIS TALLEY, LINDSEY WEST, LAURA TZE, SUSAN SHOME, LISA CONNELLY, PAT ROTH, ELIZABETH CALVERA and VIRGINIA CURRIE.

The New River Valley Workshop recently recognized DALE CLARK for his leadership as a member of the Board of Directors for the organization. He is vice-president of the First National Bank.

DOROTHY JOHNSON won $300 worth of shopping in downtown Pulaski as winner of the Valentine's Day Sweetheart Shopping Spree organized by members of the Pulaski Business Alliance. The project was created to raise money to promote Pulaski.
